Attitudes, barriers and facilitators of hospital pharmacists conducting practice‐based research: a systematic review

Introduction Practice-based research is essential in enhancing medication knowledge, quality use of medicines, the scope pharmacy profession and improving patient outcomes. This systematic review aims to uncover attitudes hospital pharmacists towards practice-based their perceptions barriers facilitators undertaking research. Methods A search MEDLINE, Embase, International Pharmaceutical Abstracts Cumulative Index Nursing Allied Health Literature databases from 1 January 2000 11 March 2021 was conducted. Peer-reviewed empirical studies exploring pharmacists’ – as well were included a descriptive synthesis used identify common themes. Results Nine this review. Barriers across four broad themes related pharmacist capacity capability, workplace environment, resources, culture. Hospital had high interest conducting research, but limited experience. Common identified lack time, support, funding, culture, competing priorities. Having post-graduate qualification positive attitude facilitated participation. Departmental designated time creation networks forums seen for Conclusion recognise importance care advancing practice. However, large variation has been reported confidence experience Building capability by supporting qualification, providing creating may strengthen culture amongst pharmacists.
